Kabwe Warriors coach Tenant Chilumba has joined the Under-17 technical bench ahead of the 2018 Cosafa Castle Cup championship.
Chilumba will be on the bench in the absence of head coach Oswald Mutapa who is still seeing out his ban by Cosafa that ends in August.
In an interview after the morning session at Independence Stadium, Mutapa who has assembled the final 20-member squad said his lads were focused on the job.
Mutapa said the first target for the technical bench would be to get out of the group that comprises South Africa, Mozambique and Lesotho.
“Zambia being a powerhouse in the Southern region will always be expected to win. Being defending champions means we also have to defend the title and eventually qualify for AFCON,” he said.
Mutapa said the bench had enough cover on the bench to ensure a seamless tournament.
“We have Tenant (Chilumba), George Chilufya and Emmanuel Msichili, the bench is adequately prepared,” he said.
“What is important is to pull out of the group. I know there are three groups, there will be also a second best loser. It is always a challenge being in a group with South Africa but any team is equally in the same position. Everyone wants to win, we will definitely try to win.”
Zambia is in Group B alongside South Africa, Mozambique and Lesotho.
Winners of the 2018 edition will automatically qualify for the Tanzania which 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The tournament runs from July 19-29 in Mauritius.
